What Is an Ecommerce Listing Character Counter?

An ecommerce listing character counter checks whether your product text fits a marketplace’s field limits before you publish. Titles, descriptions, bullet points and tags all have maximum lengths, and a listing that is too long can be truncated, rejected or ranked poorly.

You select a platform and a field, then type or paste your text. The tool compares your text against the built-in limit for that field and reports the result instantly, so you can edit copy with confidence instead of guessing how many characters you have used.

How Character and Byte Counting Works

The tool measures your text in four ways. The character count is the text length: every letter, number, space, punctuation mark and ideograph counts as one. The byte count encodes the text as UTF-8: English letters and numbers use one byte, while Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters typically use three bytes each. It also counts words and lines.

Each field in the built-in table carries a character limit and, where the platform enforces one, a byte limit. Usage below 90% of a limit is marked green, between 90% and 100% amber as a warning, and anything over the limit red. The limits shown are the ones stored in this tool, not a live query of the platforms.

How to Use the Listing Character Counter

  1. Choose the platform you are listing on.
  2. Choose the field, such as title, description or backend search terms.
  3. Read the note shown for that field.
  4. Type or paste your listing text into the box.
  5. Watch the character and byte progress bars and the remaining counts update.
  6. Trim or expand your text until both measures are within the limit.

Listing Character Count Example

For an Amazon title, enter “Stainless Steel Water Bottle 32oz”. The tool counts 33 characters and 33 bytes — five words in one line — against Amazon’s 200-character title limit, leaving 167 characters.

For a byte example, the Chinese text “不锈钢保温杯” is 6 characters but 18 bytes in UTF-8 — three bytes per character — so its average is 3.0 bytes per character. That gap is why fields such as Amazon’s backend search terms must be checked in bytes as well as characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ecommerce listing character counter?

It is a tool that checks your product listing text against a platform’s field limits. Choose a platform and a field — such as a title or description — paste or type your text, and the tool shows the character count, UTF-8 byte count and remaining space in real time.

What is the difference between characters and bytes?

A character is a single text element, counted as the text length. A byte is a unit of UTF-8 encoding: English letters and numbers use one byte each, while Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters typically use three bytes. That is why a field can be within its character limit but over its byte limit.

What happens when I approach or exceed a limit?

The progress bars stay green below 90% of a limit, turn amber as a warning once you pass 90%, and turn red when the text is over the limit. The tool also shows exactly how many characters or bytes remain, or how many you are over by.

Which platforms and fields are covered?

The built-in table covers 29 sales platforms — including Amazon, eBay, Shopify, Google, Etsy, Walmart, Shopee, Lazada, AliExpress and TikTok Shop — with limits for fields such as titles, descriptions, bullet points, tags and backend search terms.
