What Is a VAT Calculator?

A VAT calculator works out the Value Added Tax included in or added to a price. VAT is a consumption tax applied to most goods and services in many countries, collected at each stage of production and ultimately paid by the end buyer. Sellers need VAT figures when invoicing, pricing products and checking what portion of a sale is tax rather than revenue.

This tool contains the standard and reduced rates for 28 countries and regions, from the United Kingdom and the European Union to Japan, India, Australia and Canada. You choose the country, enter an amount and get an immediate breakdown of the net price, the tax and the gross price — no manual rate lookup required.

How VAT Is Calculated

The calculator supports two directions. In Add VAT mode your amount is the net price:

  • VAT = net price multiplied by the rate, divided by 100
  • Gross price = net price + VAT

In Remove VAT mode your amount is the gross price:

  • Net price = gross price divided by one plus the rate divided by 100
  • VAT = gross price − net price

Each country offers its standard rate and, where one exists, a reduced rate — for example the United Kingdom uses 20% standard and 5% reduced, while Germany uses 19% and 7%. If you enter an optional platform commission percentage, it is charged on the gross price, and profit equals the net price minus that commission.

How to Use the VAT Calculator

  1. Choose the mode: Add VAT for a net price, or Remove VAT for a gross price.
  2. Select the country or region from the dropdown.
  3. Pick the Standard or Reduced rate.
  4. Enter the amount in that country’s currency.
  5. Optionally enter a platform commission percentage.
  6. Review the VAT breakdown and, if commission was entered, your profit after VAT and fees.

VAT Calculation Example

Using the United Kingdom at the 20% standard rate, start with a net price of £100:

  • VAT = £100 × 20% = £20.00
  • Gross price = £100 + £20 = £120.00

Working backwards, enter £120 in Remove VAT mode:

  • Net price = £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100.00
  • VAT = £120 − £100 = £20.00

If you add a 15% platform commission, it equals £120 × 15% = £18, leaving £82 after VAT and commission.

These figures use the rates built into the tool. Verify current rates with the relevant tax authority before making financial decisions.

Questions fréquentes

What is a VAT calculator?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added to most goods and services. This calculator works with the standard and reduced rates built into the tool for 28 countries and regions, so you can see the tax on a price without looking up the rate yourself.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

In Add VAT mode, enter a net, tax-exclusive amount. VAT equals the net amount multiplied by the tax rate, and the gross price equals the net amount plus VAT. For example, a net £100 at the UK’s 20% standard rate gives £20 VAT and a £120 gross price.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

In Remove VAT mode, enter a gross, tax-inclusive amount. The net price equals the gross amount divided by one plus the tax rate, and VAT equals gross minus net. For example, £120 at 20% gives a net price of £100 and VAT of £20.

Can I include platform commission in the result?

Yes. Enter an optional platform commission percentage and the calculator multiplies it by the gross price, then shows your net profit as the net price minus that commission. The tool is an estimate calculator, not tax advice — confirm your obligations with the relevant tax authority.
