Frequently Asked Questions
How much does PayPal charge per transaction?
PayPal charges a percentage plus a fixed fee per transaction, and the exact numbers depend on the country where your account is registered. The calculator ships with default rates for 14 regions including the US (2.99% + $0.49), the UK (2.9% + £0.30), the EU (2.99% + €0.35), Japan (3.6% + ¥40), Singapore (3.49% + S$0.50) and Brazil (4.99% + R$0.60). Pick your region in the PayPal tab to see the rate that applies to you.
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
Stripe charges a percentage plus a fixed fee per successful card charge, varying by country. The Stripe tab covers 21 regions including the US (2.9% + $0.30), Germany (1.4% + €0.25), Japan (3.6% + ¥40), Singapore (3.5% + S$0.50) and Indonesia (3.2% + Rp1,500). For cross-border transactions, toggle the international card surcharge on to apply the international card percentage where one is configured.
What is the difference between forward and reverse calculation?
Forward calculation: you enter the amount the customer pays, and the calculator shows the fee and your net payout. Reverse calculation: you enter the amount you want to receive after fees, and the calculator tells you how much to charge the customer so that fees leave you with that exact net. Both modes are available in the PayPal and Stripe tabs.
Are the exchange rates in this calculator real-time?
Exchange rates are pulled from Open Exchange Rates and refreshed hourly. These rates are for reference only — your payment processor may apply a different rate, and currency-conversion fees charged by PayPal or Stripe are not automatically included unless you toggle the international card surcharge on the Stripe tab.
What Is a Payment Fee Calculator?
A payment fee calculator estimates the transaction fee a payment processor charges on a given sale. For each amount you enter, it returns the processor fee, the net amount you receive, and the effective percentage rate. This page supports PayPal and Stripe, two of the most common payment processors used by online sellers.
The calculator ships with default rates for 14 PayPal regions (US, UK, EU, AU, CA, JP, CN, SG, HK, IN, BR, MX, NZ, CH) and 21 Stripe regions (US, UK, EU, AU, CA, JP, SG, HK, DE, FR, IT, ES, NL, NZ, CH, MY, TH, ID, PH, VN, KR). Administrators can override any of these defaults in the backend tool-rates table; when overrides exist, the calculator merges them on top of the built-in defaults.
How Payment Fees Are Calculated
Both PayPal and Stripe use the same fee structure on this calculator: a percentage of the transaction amount plus a fixed fee per transaction.
Forward mode (Client Pays): fee = amount × (percentage / 100) + fixed; net = amount − fee. You know what the customer pays and want to see how much lands in your account.
Reverse mode (I Want to Receive): gross = (amount + fixed) / (1 − percentage / 100); fee = gross − amount; net = amount. You know how much you want to receive and the calculator tells you what the customer must pay.
For Stripe, if the selected region defines an international_card_percentage and the international card toggle is on, the percentage part uses that international rate instead of the standard rate; the fixed fee is unchanged. If the region has no international_card_percentage configured, the toggle has no effect.
The effective rate shown in the breakdown is fee ÷ customer-paid amount × 100, so it includes both the percentage and the fixed component. Currency conversion, when needed, uses hourly-refreshed exchange rates from Open Exchange Rates.
How to Use the Fee Calculator
- Switch to the PayPal or Stripe tab.
- Select the country or region where your payment account is registered.
- Choose "Client Pays" (forward) or "I Want to Receive" (reverse) mode.
- Enter the amount in the account currency.
- Read the fee, net and effective rate in the breakdown, and use the currency converter for a cross-currency reference.
- On the Stripe tab, toggle the international card option if your customer pays with a card issued in a different region.
Calculation Example
Forward, PayPal US, $100. Default rate: 2.99% + $0.49.
- fee = 100 × 0.0299 + 0.49 = $3.48
- net = 100 − 3.48 = $96.52
- effective rate = 3.48 / 100 × 100 = 3.48%
Reverse, Stripe Germany, want to receive €100. Default rate: 1.4% + €0.25.
- gross = (100 + 0.25) / (1 − 0.014) = 100.25 / 0.986 ≈ €101.67
- fee ≈ €1.67
- effective rate ≈ 1.64%
These numbers use the default rates shipped with the calculator. If your account has negotiated rates or volume discounts, override the defaults in the backend tool-rates table and the calculator will use your values instead.
