Tips for Accurate Estimation
Include All Costs
Don't forget platform fees, payment processing fees, returns, and currency conversion costs.
Use Real Data
Base your estimates on actual ad performance data from the last 30-90 days for best accuracy.
Monitor Break-even ROAS
If your actual ROAS is below the break-even point, you're losing money on each sale.
Factor in Seasonality
Ad costs and conversion rates fluctuate. Calculate ROI for different seasons separately.
What Is ROI?
Return on investment (ROI) is a percentage that compares the profit from an activity to the cost of running it. A positive ROI means revenue exceeded costs; a negative ROI means the activity lost money; and zero means you broke even.
Cross-border sellers use ROI to judge whether a product, ad campaign or sales channel is worth continuing. Unlike revenue alone, it accounts for every cost — products, shipping, advertising and other expenses — so it reflects the money you actually keep rather than the money taken at checkout.
How Is ROI Calculated?
The estimator uses these formulas:
- Total revenue = selling price × units sold
- Total costs = (product cost per unit × units sold) + (shipping cost per unit × units sold) + ad spend + other costs
- Net profit = total revenue − total costs
- ROI = net profit / total costs × 100%
- ROAS = total revenue / ad spend
- Profit margin = net profit / total revenue × 100%
- Break-even ROAS = selling price / (selling price − product cost − shipping cost)
This follows the standard ROI form: gain from investment minus cost of investment, divided by the cost of investment. The calculator treats your revenue as the gain and all entered costs as the investment.
How to Use the ROI Estimator
- Select the currency you want to calculate in.
- Enter your total ad spend for the period.
- Enter the product cost per unit, the selling price, and the shipping cost per unit.
- Enter the number of units sold and any other costs.
- Review net profit, ROI, ROAS, profit per unit and margin, and check the revenue breakdown chart.
- Compare your ROAS with the break-even ROAS to confirm the campaign is profitable.
ROI Calculation Example
Using the default figures — $5,000 ad spend, $15 product cost, $49.99 selling price, $8 shipping cost, 500 units sold and $500 other costs:
| Total revenue (49.99 × 500) | $24,995.00 |
| Total product costs (15 × 500) | $7,500.00 |
| Total shipping (8 × 500) | $4,000.00 |
| Ad spend | $5,000.00 |
| Other costs | $500.00 |
| Total costs | $17,000.00 |
| Net profit | $7,995.00 |
| ROI | 47.0% |
| ROAS | 5.00x |
| Break-even ROAS | 1.85x |
| Profit margin | 32.0% |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ROI and how is it calculated?
ROI (return on investment) measures how much profit you make relative to your costs. This calculator uses ROI = net profit / total costs x 100, where net profit is total revenue minus all costs. For example, $15,000 of revenue against $10,000 of costs gives a 50% ROI.
What is ROAS and how does it differ from ROI?
ROAS (return on ad spend) is total revenue divided by ad spend — for example, $15,000 of revenue from $5,000 of ad spend is a 3.0x ROAS. ROAS only considers ad spend, while ROI compares profit against every cost, including products, shipping and other expenses.
How does break-even ROAS work?
Break-even ROAS is the point at which you make zero profit on a sale before ad costs. It equals selling price / (selling price - product cost - shipping cost). If your actual ROAS is above the break-even figure, advertising is profitable; below it, each sale loses money.
Does this calculator support multiple currencies?
Yes. You can calculate in 18 currencies, including USD, CNY, EUR, GBP, JPY and more, and a built-in currency converter lets you compare results across currencies.
